The Actor-brad Pitt: An Strangely Accessible Superstar
He is the owner of their own island. He's probably the most bankable celebrities on the planet. He is able to write their own ticket, career-smart. So The Actor-brad Pitt does not have to perform a cameo in '21 Jump Street,' the approaching film version from the dated and most likely mortifying 1980s TV cop drama that gave him his first large break. That he's doing this anyway, based on Existence & Style, shows such a mensch he's, such a stand-up guy. However, it's one of several instances throughout his career by which Depp has proven he does not placed on movie-star airs but will stick by old buddies, animal buddies as well as fans who're perfect other people. '21 Jump Street,' a show about cops who go undercover as students, was about the air such a long time ago (1987-91) that little from the audience for that 2012 film version will probably remember it. Therefore the film can use the publicity boost that the Depp cameo will give you. Existence & Style reviews that Depp did his walk-on like a teacher in May. "It's done," playboy quotes him as saying. "I went in and did my bit and labored with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. It had been fun." It isn't the very first time Depp has honored his roots having a cameo to help individuals who gave him his start. In 1991, he made an appearance briefly within the 'Freddy's Dead: The Ultimate Nightmare' like a star carrying out a "Here's your brain on drugs" public service announcement on television. (Credited underneath the typically eccentric Depp pseudonym Opra Noodlemantra, Depp provides the familiar sizzling-egg spiel, simply to have Freddy Krueger whack him hard using the fry pan.) It had been the sixth movie within the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise, that was quickly drained of steam. But Depp, whose first Hollywood gig was his role like a Freddy victim within the original 'Nightmare' back in 1984, assisted the filmmakers out by lending them his star energy, then increasing after '21 Jump Street' and also the hit movie 'Edward Scissorhands.' The Actor-brad Pitt Cameo in 'Freddy's Dead: The Ultimate Nightmare' Depp has additionally been a longtime booster from the late author Hunter S. Thompson and the family. He assisted get made the apparently unfilmable 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' by starring as Thompson alter ego Raoul Duke. He's since made an appearance in a number of Thompson-related documentaries, and he's starring in Bruce Robinson's adaptation of Thompson's 'The Rum Diary' (going to be out October 28), a movie Depp had tied to in excess of ten years of development limbo. And Depp even taken care of Thompson's well known funeral in 2005, where the author had his ashes shot from a cannon mounted atop a 150-feet tower. "All I am doing is attempting to make certain his last wish comes true," Depp stated at that time. "Among the finest to transmit my friend view he really wants to venture out.Inch 'The Rum Diary' - Trailer Terry Gilliam, who directed Depp in 'Fear and Loathing,' is at a bind when Heath Ledger died in 2008 before finishing his role within the director's 'The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus.' Depp and Jude Law walked in to the fantasy film, playing alternate versions of Ledger's character, permitting Gilliam to accomplish the image. Depp even saved the existence of the animal co-star. Based on a 'Sleepy Hollow' fan site, Depp adopted Goldeneye, who performed his mount Gunpowder within the 1999 film, when he heard the main one-eyed equine ended up being to be placed lower. But it's not necessary to be a classic friend of Depp's to become about the receiving finish of his largesse, like a nine-year-old fan discovered last fall. London schoolgirl Beatrice Delap authored instructions to Depp's 'Pirates from the Caribbean' character, Captain Jack Sparrow, requesting him to assist her and her class mates stage a mutiny from the instructors. To her astonishment, Depp complied, turning up with only 10 minutes' notice at her school entirely sailing regalia. (Switched out he is at London shooting 'Pirates from the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,' so not just was he in Delap's neighborhood, but younger crowd had the costume with him.) The Actor-brad Pitt Surprises Nine-Year-Old Fan No surprise Depp desired to play a straight heroic role as Tonto in Disney's 'Lone Ranger' reboot. With this project almost dead due to budget fears, maybe Depp can ride to save the day again and work out how the studio makes it inexpensively. Without doubt Disney executives are keeping their fingers entered that they may function as the receivers of the identical generosity Depp bestows upon old pals, horses and nine-year-old women. Pic history holds 'Three'-peat moss
Paul W.S. Anderson sees "The 3 Musketeers" because the perfect brand, a vintage which each generation reaches produce its take. He and the producer Jeremy Bolt credit their determining intro towards the Musketeers to Richard Lester's signature "The 3 Musketeers" and it is follow up "The 4 Musketeers," while more youthful decades may more readily recognize the 1993 Disney version starring Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen.Actually, numerous versions abound, using the Musketeers already there at the outset of film history, clocking along with their first version in France in 1903. By 1929, Douglas Fairbanks' legendary swashbuckler had been version # 4.The very first seem version was properly in French, "L'ensemble des Trois Mousquetaires" (1932) with Edith Mera as Milady p Winter, charged as "une aventuriere sans foi ni loi" (a godless and lawless adventuress). Perhaps the most harmful -- searching, if little else -- could be Lana Turner's Milady in MGM's 1948 Technicolor extravaganza starring an acrobatic Gene Kelly, with an extremely evil Vincent Cost.Inevitably, our heroes were ripe for comedy. The Ritz Bros. started them back in 1939 for Fox, then a 1942 Mexican comedy starring Cantinflas, as well as in the '70s in france they comedy quartet, some Charlots, provided the laughs for 2 films. Not to mention Mickey, Jesse and Wacky got within their licks. In 1928, the Musketeers mastered Broadway inside a Ziegfeld-created stage musical, which later brought to TV tuners produced by the Russians in 1978 and 1993, and also the Nederlander in 2003.Company, you will find the inevitable '70s hardcore porn version, "The Sex Adventures from the Three Musketeers," from West Germany. So that as if to redress the karmic balance, we now have "Barbie dolls and also the Three Musketeers" (2009), whose fight cry is "Don't wreck havoc on the gown!Inch As D'Artagnan's daughter Corinne, Barbie dolls really wants to get to be the first female musketeer, but hers is just one of 4 distaff Musketeer films. And none of the counts the numerous transpositions from the figures that has to include "The 3 Shaolin Musketeers," the Spaghetti Western adventure "Zorro and also the Three Musketeers," the B-movie Western "The 3 Mesquiteers," Tom and Jerry in "The 2 Mouseketeers" along with a 1933 serial, which morphed our Musketeers towards the French Foreign Legion, starring a youthful John Wayne. And just how about "The Ring from the Musketeers" (1992) that, starring David Hasselhof, Thomas Gottschalk and Cheech Marin, must surely count because the horror version. Which begs the question, where's the Roger Corman sci-fi version? It should be available somewhere. Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

Big Brother Recap: Power of Veto Competition/Ceremony 7
The numbers may be dwindling in the Big Brother house, but Wednesday's episode proved there is still much game to be played. But first: The Zingbot is in the house, ready to insult each and every houseguest. Who got zinged the worst? Who won the power of veto? And who is now up for eviction in this very tricky double-elimination week? Let's find out. With Kalia and Porsche nominated for eviction, Daniele feels pretty good about the deal she made with Head of Household Jeff. Of course, she also promised Jeff that she wouldn't try to win the power of veto. Naturally, that was a lie. In fact, the only way Daniele can guarantee that both she and her closest ally in the house, Kalia, remain safe is to win the veto. While Daniele ponders that conundrum, Rachel passes the hours by stalking Daniele and asking her annoying questions. Seriously, I think Rachel becomes more of a 5-year-old with every episode. I have to give Daniele credit for her ability to stay calm and not totally lose it on Rachel. Of course, in the diary room she does admit that she would like to punch her in the face. (Are we wrong for wanting to see that fight?) As you can imagine, Daniele is thrilled when Rachel is the only player not chosen to play in the power of veto competition. Rachel, of course, sulks.Meaningless aside No. 1: Hey, look! Jordan is doing a striptease. It's quite possibly the least sexy striptease ever, but it was enough to get Adam all googly-eyed. In truth, she simply took off her "humilitard" after wearing it for a week. Jeff was surprised to see this new side to his girlfriend ... but he liked it! (Not as much as Adam. Maybe they should fight too!)Meaningless aside No. 2: Ever wonder what Big Brother pillow talk is like? Well if you're Jeff and Jordan, it's a long, intense discussion about the proper pronunciation of mischievous. (For the record, they are both correct, according to Merriam-Webster. Mis-cha-vous and mis-chee-vee-ous are both acceptable.)Before the veto competition, everyone's favorite insult robot showed up to cut the houseguests down to size. The Zingbot comments on Jeff's circa-1995 soul patch, Rachel's incessant talk about fiancé Brendon, Adam's resemblance to The Addams Family's Uncle Fester, Shelly's manliness and Kalia's sleeping habits. But my favorite zings (and perhaps the meanest) were for ...... Daniele, the daughter of former winner Evel Dick: Do you own a car or are you still riding your daddy's coattails?...Porsche, who is a bit curvy: Why didn't your parents name you after a car with a roomier trunk?...and the delightfully dim Jordan: The reason Jeff hasn't proposed to you is because he knows you're terrible at answering questions.Zzzziiiiiingggg! The competition required the houseguests to build the Zingbot his bride. The person to put together the fembot puzzle in the quickest time wins. Although Daniele, Kalia and Porsche all desperately want to win, Jeff wants to win even more in order to hold all the power, and by extension, have options of who to send home. Jordan, Shelly and Adam? Well, you didn't really expect them to win, did you? (Which makes me wonder: Why has Jeff built an alliance of floaters, since he says all the time that he wants to take them out? I mean, Jordan is his girlfriend, but what have Shelly and Adam done exactly? Also, look to Shelly's convo with Kalia in tonight's episode to prove she's still a snake. Watch your back, Jeff.)In any case, Jeff gets his wish, as he is the first to complete the puzzle, and therefore, the winner of the power of veto. Porsche and Kalia both promise not to come after Jeff if he should take them off the block. (Additionally, Kalia argues that she is less of a floater than Porsche because she actually won an HOH. Meh.) Aside from that, Jeff asks Daniele how solid their deal from last week is. She promises him that he is safe and further offers him and Jordan a final four deal if he agrees to also save Kalia. I don't know if I actually believe Daniele, but I think Jeff should keep Daniele one more week before making a power move.Alas, at the veto ceremony, Jeff takes Porsche off the block. And in her place he puts (shocker!) Daniele. Jeff said he gave Daniele his word in the first week, and she broke it when she tried to get Rachel to backdoor Jeff. Therefore, he can't trust her word any more. He also says that Daniele bragged that she told host Julie Chen that she didn't regret pushing to evict Jeff in a big game move. Jeff says when she walks out the door Thursday night, he hopes Daniele gives Julie a different answer. Oh snap! Or should I say: Zing!Daniele vows that she will do everything in her power to sway the votes to stay. She has no regrets, but if she is able to stay, she says Jeff will be the one regretting this move. (I don't think she has the votes, but again, I think Jeff pulled the trigger too soon. With one of her alliance members gone, Daniele would have needed Jeff for numbers at least one more week. Of course, none of them know it's a double eviction Thursday, so it all could be moot!)Anyway, do you think Jeff made the right move? Do you think Daniele will be evicted? And who else do you think will go home in Thursday's double eviction? Share all your thoughts in the comments below! show less

The Closer Creator James Duff Previews "Family Affair"
Tom Selleck and can Estes, Blue Bloods Blue Bloods' new executive producer, Erectile dysfunction Zuckerman, really wants to make one factor obvious to audiences: He isn't playing using the formula that made the sophomore CBS drama popular in the newbie.Drop Preview: Get scoop on all of your favorite coming back showsThe veteran TV author/producer was hired in May to exchange outgoing designers Robin Eco-friendly and Mitchell Burgess among reviews that CBS desired to result in the show more procedural. (Zuckerman's resume supported the idea: He offered lengthy stints on JAG and Law & Order.) However, Zuckerman demands there is little change."The concept would be to keep your show exactly the same balanced show from a situation each week and also the Reagan family issues and family drama," Zuckerman informs TVGuide.com. "I believe contrary, we may do a bit more Reagan family stuff this season.InchStudy onto see what's available for that Reagans, the way the new mayor (David Ramsey) can make trouble for Frank (Tom Selleck), and what new situation will run through the season.TVGuide.com: What is the transition been like for you personally?Erectile dysfunction Zuckerman: It's really been pretty smooth. This is a positive thing for me personally, since the last couple shows I have been in haven't survived very lengthy. [Zuckerman most lately offered as executive producer for ABC's short-resided legal drama The Entire Truth.] There's lots of continuity. ... I stored many of the old authors who are a good resource. They are good authors, plus they be aware of figures, plus they know in which the men's room is. ... People fully realize what they are doing.Blue Bloods parts ways with creatorsReports the show is altering artistically to become more procedural. Is the fact that true?Zuckerman: The only real basis for your so far as I will tell is the fact that I did previously focus on a procedural show. So, someone was creating a leap from that. I've received no such marching orders. The concept would be to keep your show exactly the same balanced show from a situation each week and Reagan family issues and family drama. I believe contrary, we may do a bit more Reagan family stuff this season. How so?Zuckerman: Some episodes are likely to put family people incompatible. Their jobs insert them in conflict. You will find likely to be some romances including a minimum of two family people this year. We are going to try and deepen the role of Henry [Len Cariou]. He isn't just in your own home cooking dinner. He's still greatly alive and vital. As well as in real existence former commissioners do a lot of things. We are also going to pay a bit more focus on Danny's marriage to Linda [Amy Carlson].Last season had a continuing story using the Blue Templar. Are you currently abandoning that kind of structure for that season?Zuckerman: No. We now have one story which will run the entire season. We're starting something in the very finish from the first episode, also it we are likely to develop it gradually during the period of the growing season. It calls for a tale for Jamie [Will Estes] as well as an organized crime figure. It will not maintain every episode. It is going to appear in some places, and it is going to culminate in, hopefully, quite a awesome conclusion either in Episode 21 or 22.So how exactly does Jamie try this organized crime member?Zuckerman: Jamie totally by accident befriends a youthful guy [Eric Morris] who's roughly his peer . He's the Jamie of the organized crime family - the more youthful person in a structured crime family We are not really confident that he's involved with your family or otherwise, but Jamie needs to decide if you should pursue this relationship like a friendship or being an informer. We also realize that Monica Raymund will have Jamie's new partner. What am i saying for Nick Turturro's Renzulli?Zuckerman: We might avoid seeing him each week. Really, [within this situation] the truth is our friend. Renzulli is really a sergeant, so that as a sergeant he rides on patrol with a number of different patrol officials. Some days he rides with Jamie plus some days Jamie is going to be riding with someone else. Jamie is going to do lots of shifting around. He'll have a wide range of recent partners. For his female partner ... some interesting issues arise between the pair of them.Is the fact that possibly among the romances you suggested at before?Zuckerman: Well she's married and also the Reagans aren't adulterers. But she's unhappy in her own marriage, and so i think it will likely be an extremely interesting dynamic.Exclusive: Blue Bloods decides Dexter alum since it's new mayorLet's discuss the brand new mayor. Zuckerman: He's an extremely dynamic mayor. He's a youthful guy he's an African-American. He originates from kind of a residential area-organizing background, the antithesis of Frank Reagan's background being an old law-and-order guy. So in lots of ways, they are opposites. The Reagan household is a vintage twentieth century New You are able to police family, which mayor is an extremely twenty-first century character. He's a politician, and Frank Reagan has some challenge with politics. The mayor signifies a altering city, and also the Reagan family must be prepared for the truth that this isn't the planet they was raised in.So how exactly does getting a brand new boss affect Frank's day-to-day responsibilities as police commissioner?Zuckerman: Frank is a superb cop, therefore it is not dependent on police techniques. It's only a matter of facing who the gamers of the city are. ... It's dependent on personas between two quite strong males with various agendas. The mayor will possess a political agenda, and it is a larger agenda compared to last mayor had. Frank just really wants to perform the right factor making the town safe for those people. For that first couple of episodes, they're type of dancing around one another. It is also normal protocol that after the brand new mayor is sworn in, the police commissioner instantly resigns, and it is as much as the brand new mayor to maintain him or otherwise. I'll help you stay speculating whether or otherwise Frank continues to be police commissioner following the first episode, but it's an problem. You pointed out concentrating on Danny [Donnie Wahlberg] and Linda's marriage before. What plans have you got on their behalf?Zuckerman: We'll have many episodes where unexpected things happen in Danny's house which are triggered by things happening outdoors the home, or the other way around. In a single episode, he's a fight with Linda that leaves him very inflammed also it causes an incident in the pub while he has not become over that. Therefore we begin to see the police work affecting the house existence and that we begin to see the home existence modify the police work. How about Danny and Jackie (Jennifer Esposito)? Zuckerman: I love that dynamic a great deal, and that we don't have any changes for the reason that. You want to keep that going. I believe that is effective. We now have a chapter approaching where Jackie goes undercover with Danny backing her up.Is Blue Bloods in your Watchlist? Add it as well as your other faves now and not miss an episodeAnd Erin [Bridget Moynahan]? The situation within the season premiere really involved a buddy of hers, right?Zuckerman: Right. There is a murder, and also the new widow is surely a good friend of Erin's. Since the conditions from the murder are really pretty scandalous, the widow would really prefer the killer go free than possess a trial which may expose her family towards the shame of discovering what her dead husband was as much as. Erin, obviously, does not wish to let a killer go free, so she's torn from a personal request and also the duty of her job.The other plans have you got on her this year? Zuckerman: We now have a minumum of one episode approaching where she'll do a murder trial, and there is most likely a romance approaching within the cards on her too. [In your own home], there's one episode where Nicky wants more freedom and Erin's very nervous about this, especially since some teens were just killed for pointless. So, you've recognized the 2 romances you pointed out, but how about Frank? We had him using the reporter last season - anything this season?Zuckerman: We all do come with an idea for any relationship for Frank. Will still be in early stages and so i can't speak at length from it, however, you could see Frank inside a relationship having a somewhat surprising person. You are overtaking a reveal that grew to become popular this past year. Have you got any sort of goals to assist the show grow?Zuckerman: I believe the very first duty associated with a TV author will be entertaining and the second reason is to become intelligent. During my years writing for other shows, I believe I learned how you can structure mysteries to fool people a bit, and so i think a few of the mystery aspects of the show will be more twisty and subtle compared to they might have been previously. I wish to just keep your show just like it had been this past year, and then try to turn it into a tiny bit better. No major changes have been in them.Azure Bloods returns Friday, Sept. 23 at 10/9c on CBS.

Red Bull amps up energy-fueled content
Quick, name some new players making a big splash in showbiz these days. You probably thought of Apple, Google and Netflix. Chances are you didn't think of Red Bull. But start thinking of them. The Austria-based energy drink giant, which has been producing action sports and lifestyle programs for more than 20 years to bolster its brand, decided to formalize its content business in 2007, when it launched Red Bull Media House in Europe. In January it set up a U.S. base in Santa Monica that includes production, distribution and licensing units. The goal is to create a revenue-generating media business parallel to Red Bull's beverage business, said the company's U.S. topper, Werner Brell. "We want to be profit-making at some point in the near future."On Sept. 7, Red Bull will release "The Art of Flight," an 80-minute film that follows snowboarders at locations around the world as they perform seemingly death-defying stunts. After a premiere at New York's Beacon Theater, the film tour will continue to other cities through November. The film will also be available on iTunes and Blu-ray discs that can be ordered online, before moving to retail DVD release. Further theatrical and TV plans are slated for 2012.Earlier, Red Bull scored high on the awareness meter for "Red Bull Project X," an 18-month media initiative for which it built a training facility for snowboarder Shaun White, who went on to win gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Like many of Red Bull's projects, it yielded material for DVD, online and TV -- fitting the company's new mold of content for content's sake. "It wasn't about the brand, it was about how Shaun pushed the sport to new levels," said production head Scott Bradfield.Further pursuing that model, in February Red Bull inked a deal with reality production shingle Bunim/Murray Prods. to co-develop youth-oriented programming. In addition to using its in-house production resources, Red Bull outsources projects to more than a dozen vendors such as Brain Farm Digital Cinema and Freeride Entertainment -- specialists in daredevil-style action footage.Privately-held Red Bull won't disclose its budgets, but the exotic content, far-flung locations and ingenious camera rigging seen on much of the material don't come cheap."We've done over 100 projects for Red Bull since 2000," said Freeride owner Derek Westerlund, "from ice climbing in the Himalayas to Formula One ice racing in Quebec. Every one is an adventure. They're always pushing the boundaries."In addition to the heart-pounding footage, Red Bull is basing its strategy for success on targeting multiple platforms. "We want to be on all the different devices people have at their disposal," said Brell, "mobile phones, iPads, laptops, TV."Movie theaters are also part of the plan. The company is in talks with digital cinema services provider Cinedigm to license alternative programming for digital delivery to bigscreens outside of weekends."The action sports content they're producing is perfect for digital cinema," said Cinedigm topper Chris McGurk, who hopes to set up a "destination night for recurring, branded programming," charging admission for screenings of first-run original HD and 3D content, perhaps with an interactive component such as a live Q&A with a sports star.Brell said Red Bull's U.S. division is also considering getting into scripted programming. Its European production arm Terra Mater unveiled three features in May, including fiction drama "Patagonia."Bookings & SigningsDigital Artists Agency signed motion-capture producer and supervisor James Knight ("Avatar"), vfx supervisor Gray Marshall ("The Hangover") and animation director and supervisor Bernd Angerer ("47 Ronin").Dattner Dispoto booked d.p.'s Xavier Grobet on Kirk Jones' "What to Expect When You're Expecting," Giles Nuttgens on Scott McGehee and David Siegel's "What Maisie Knew," Bobby Bukowski on Brian Dannelly's "Struck by Lightning," Bob Gantz on CW's "Hart of Dixie," David Stockton on Fox's "Alcatraz," Arthur Reinhart on History's "The Hatfields and the McCoys" and Arlene Nelson on Marta Cunningham's docu "It Takes a Village"; and production designer Justin Dragonas on Geraldine Nakache and Herve Mimran's "Nous York." H'w'd makes inroads into China's B.O.
Studios are watching how "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" opens in China to gauge box office potential for Hollywood pics.
China has been slow to raise the quota on foreign pics since local auds have been flocking more to homegrown fare such as "Let the Bullets Fly."
When "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" bows today in China, it will provide an up-to-the-minute snapshot of the box office potential for Hollywood pics in the country. But if quotas are loosened, a potential half-billion dollars more per year could pour into studio coffers, and that amount has the potential to significantly change the biz landscape. The last "Potter" pic could easily approach the $210 million that "Avatar" racked up, while "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" scored China's biggest three-day debut ever for an American film at $40 million, eclipsing "Avatar" by 72%.But Warners and other studios releasing Hollywood fare in China still face significant hurdles. "Harry Potter" opened in nearly every other country the weekend of July 2 but was hobbled in China by a government-imposed blackout period. Releasing a film four weeks after its initial rollout feeds a giant piracy maw, which rankles studios.Another sore point: For every "Harry Potter" and "Avatar" allowed into China, there are many other studio films rejected due to the decades-old quota on foreign pics.According to a Warners spokesperson, China will have to lessen its current quota system if the country is expected to reach triple-digit growth by 2015.When Rupert Murdoch took aim at China's restrictions on foreign movies while attending the Shanghai Film Festival last month, his remarks rekindled the debate on if or when the country's quota system on foreign pics may finally bite the dust. The quota -- which limits to around 20 the number of foreign movies allowed into the Mainland annually on a revenue-sharing basis -- is a source of frustration for the Hollywood studios, which see China as a vast potential audience for their fare, if only it can be effectively accessed.Last year, Chinese B.O. was up 64% at $1.53 billion. "Avatar's" take was the second biggest outside North America. "Inception" took $69 million. This means China is becoming a big factor in the 67% of the studios' revenue generated abroad last year. There have been rumblings that the quota may be loosened. A just-published report by the China Film Assn. Research Center suggested there could be some easing of the quota system as the industry opens up. Family movies, especially, could gain more access to the market, driven by a need for content to meet demand from the rapid rise in the number of screens. This will probably translate into an additional 10 or so movies allowed in per year. With just 10 more titles, another half-billion dollars from Hollywood pics annually would vault the fast-growing territory into a position as the second biggest after the U.S. Last year the country added 313 theaters and 1,533 screens for a total of just over 6,200 screens. Three-quarters of Chinese cities still don't have decent facilities, but roughly three 450-seat theaters were constructed every day, and in five years the country will have 60,000 screens. Foreign companies should benefit from that. But don't expect the quota to be abolished outright anytime soon, biz sources say."What we'll probably see is a slow increase in the number of foreign movies allowed on a revenue-share basis. But it won't be a major increase, and the quota system won't be stopped," one industryite said. The Chinese won't allow faster change for political and commercial reasons. China is helping its own growing biz (using blackout periods to give local pics time to breathe) while also stopping politically suspect Western culture from flooding into the country. At the Shanghai Film Festival last month, Murdoch said there was no other film market as exciting as China, but "the promise of investment is not being fully realized ... because market access remains so restricted."The roughly 20 foreign pics (mostly from Hollywood) that come into China each year make up nearly half of the revenues generated in the country, with the 500 or so domestic movies competing for the rest. A big percentage of local pics' overall B.O. comes from co-productions with Hong Kong.Chinese movies are drawing more of the homegrown audience -- Jiang Wen's "Let the Bullets Fly" took $134 million here last year -- but inroads have been slow, and the Chinese government is seemingly eager to protect domestic fare from foreign competition at the box office. There is a certain amount of pressure on China to do more about film distribution since it missed the March deadline to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling to loosen state controls on foreign media. However, a complete lift of the quota is unlikely given China's political system -- it says it restricts foreign films because it has strict cultural rules on what can be shown.Albert Lee, chief exec of Emperor Motion Pictures in Hong Kong, which co-produced "Let the Bullets Fly," believes an end to the quota would open the floodgates and allow Hollywood studios to destroy the local biz. His nightmare is a flurry of "Avatars" wreaking havoc on the Chinese biz."The Hollywood studios are extremely competitive. No Chinese company is equipped to go to Holly-wood and compete," Lee said.MPAA chief Chris Dodd, in his maiden voyage to China at the Shanghai fest, skirted the issue and did not specifically call for an end to quotas, which suggests there are negotiations going on behind the scenes about possible changes. But Dodd did say that opening up the market could help the Chinese biz reach its own full potential -- the MPAA is keen to avoid the "floodgates" idea."China's movie market is a success story in the making," Dodd told a panel. "All the ingredients are there for China's film industry to become a major player on the world stage, just as China has always been a major player on the world cultural stage." TCA: Creators Say 'Two Broke Girls' Is No 'Sex And The City'
Diane Haithman is contributing to Deadline's TCA coverage. Michael Patrick King Not Doing 'Sex And The City' Prequel At todays TCA panel on 2 Broke Girls -- a new comedy from Sex and the City veteran Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings, who is also starring in her own sitcom for NBC this season -- the creative team shunned comparisons between the Sex and the City and the new CBS comedy just because theyre both about single women. That show and this show (have) completely different DNA, King said, protesting that girl shows are often spoken about as if they are all the same show, and all books about women summarily dismissed as chick lit. (2 Broke Girls is) the evil twin of chick lit, King said. And unlike Sex, where no one really knew -- or wanted to know -- how the women paid for their picturesque Manhattan apartments and Jimmy Choo shoes, King said money would be a hard reality beyond just the title. Carrie Bradshaw and her closet were a fantasy, he said, likening Carries wardrobe to the closet in The Chronicles of Narnia. Those girls had relationship check lists. These girls barely have checks.King added that the story line of one of the waitresses, portrayed by Beth Behrs, as a rich girl whose family has lost all their money was not directly inspired by Bernie Madoff but inspired by todays economic reality. We liked the scary idea of talking about money, he said. (There is one unavoidable connection between the shows that came up early in the panel, however: Kat Dennings, who stars as the streetwise one in the pair of waitresses of the title, portrayed the self-described blow job Bar Mitzvah girl in an episode of Sex and the City. Dennis claims that she had to ask Sex star Kim Cattrall what blow job meant). As she had at an NBC panel earlier in the week, Cummings defended her ability to act as an executive consultant on this show as well as star in her own sitcom, though acknowledging that NBCs Whitney might demand more of her presence. Im starring in the other show; I have to physically be there, she said. For his part, King described Cummings role this way: Whitney is part of the architecture of the show; now, were in the house, he said. The producers caught some flak from reporters at the panel about playing with some ethnic stereotypes in the show, particular the character of a recent Korean immigrant. The character is not dumb -- he just moved to the country, he doesnt know the language, Cummings said, arguing that journalists might have a misperception of the character from the pilot episode because you cant explore (every character) in 20 minutes. King also said that the show was not going to back off from edgy humor, including a joke in the pilot about disabled physicist Stephen Hawking that riled some in the audience. We want it to be as current and as edgy as possible, he said. Twenty-three-year-old girls are very sophisticated in what they are processing. You can not like that joke, and I understand why, but we will always reach for comedy.
